Earth Hour Spreads Environmental Message Across Singapore As Lights Go Out

Dear children,

Iconic landmarks in Singapore such as the ArtScience Museum, Esplanade, Gardens by the Bay and Singapore Flyer, went dark at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday (25 March) as non-essential lights were switched off for the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment - Earth Hour.

This year being the tenth anniversary of the first Earth hour in 2007, was celebrated with a special event, the 5 k.m. Earth Hour Run, where reusable bottles were distributed instead of the usual disposable cups, and participants were offered water in jelly form to reduce waste. Winners were given biodegradable medals that would sprout basil shoots if planted.

"Earth Hour shows how everyone can play a part in shining a light on environmental action and this year, we aim to redefine what sustainability means for people in an urban city like Singapore," said WWF - Singapore's communications director Kim Stengert.

Make Someone's Day in a Small Way

Dear children,

Here is an interesting article which I have read and I would like to share with you. 20 March was International Day of Happiness. A group of deejays offered to pay for the groceries of unsuspecting shoppers at Giant Hypermarket in Tampines. This act brought a smile not only to the shoppers but also the deejays themselves. A small act of kindness goes a long way!

Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense

Dear children,

These are the simple present tense and simple past tense slides which we have gone through in class this week.

Recap:

- Simple present tense is used to show that the action is a habit. Look out for clue words such as 'everyday', 'often' and 'always' which tell us that the action is a habit.

- Simple past tense is used to show a past action. We know the time it happened. Look out for clue words such as 'last night', 'yesterday', 'just now' and 'was'.
